After two fantastic shows in the early part of the summer with Oasis and Take That, it was U2’s turn to roll up at the Millennium Stadium with their record breaking 360° Tour. 22nd August saw “The Edge” return to his birthplace with a revolutionary stage and video wall.

The stage, nicknamed, the claw is the largest set ever built consisting of 190 tons of solid steel, rising 150 feet from the floor, over a massive stage with rotating bridges and a 60-ton cylindrical video system of interlocking LED panels creating an intimate 360° experience, providing  fans, with a clear view of the stage from every angle.

Behind the scenes, providing the manpower, Rock City were called upon to provide all local crewing requirements after successfully completing similar contracts for Oasis and Take That earlier in the summer.

For our steel crew the challenge was a significant one. Not only was this a bespoke design but the build had been cut by 24 hours on previous European shows. Managed and Co-ordinated from the Cardiff office 500 crew were used, working over 6000 hours, during a 7 day period; resulting in an electrifying record breaking 90,000 crowd and  a fitting end to U2’s European Tour. The production build and break was just as intense, one day build overnight load-out into containers, to be shipped out to Soldiers Field Chicago, with deadlines non negotiable. 300 crew massing 3000 hours insured the successful outcome breaking previous load-out times by over 60 minutes.

The Stadium shows have been a great success and a big thank you goes out to all that were involved whatever your task........ as a team we made it happen and made it happen well.
