AIF’s Drastic On Plastic

With the end of the year in sight, venues were maxed out and cramming the punters in before the Christmas break. Cardiff, Bristol, Bournemouth and Plymouth saw an increase from last year and kept all our crew busy up until the 22nd December; then all quiet till January. A well deserved rest for all after another record breaking year- December totalling just shy of 150 jobs and over 7,500 hours. Our vehicles covered just over 13,000 miles with most jobs being crew based again.

Luna Cinema picked up the monthly £100 charity draw (going to St Barnabas Hospice) with a pick from the feedback forms.

Reusable Bottles and Travel Mug Initiative

With The Association of Independent Festivals’ (AIF’s) Drastic On Plastic campaign, launched in 2018, to reduce pointless plastic and waste at AIF events, it saw 60 independent festivals pledge to eliminate single use plastic on their sites by 2021. Rock City works for many of these festivals and thought it was time we did our bit.

So the summer of 2018 saw the introduction to all staff of reusable bottles and washable travel mugs. The travel mugs speak for themselves but below are some interesting facts on plastic bottles:

  • Each reusable bottle helps to prevent approximately 167 single-use bottles from ending up in landfill every year.
  • 480 billion plastic bottles were sold globally in 2016 – that’s a million bottles per minute or 20,000 per second, according to Euromonitor.
  • Only 23% of plastic bottles are recycled when finished.
  • Close on £1Billion in wasted plastic each year, equivalent to 912 million gallons of oil.
  •  If you visualise bottles lined up end to end in a straight line, it would wrap around the earth 190 times.
  • Plastic water bottles that were placed in the landfill today will take up to 1000 years to biodegrade.
  • Plastic water bottles can contain a chemical known as Bisphenol A (BPA) which can be very harmful to your health.  BPA has been connected to cases of hormonal issues and even cancer.
